Perhaps you have a home at the shore, a cabin at the lake or a condo in a sunny resort – no doubt you’ve noticed you have an awful lot of friends and family who love to visit. It can be both a blessing and a curse to be fortunate enough to have a second home – it’s wonderful to have company and entertain family and friends but sometimes it can seem as if you’re running a hotel or a bed and breakfast.

The key to enjoying your second home is to outfit it in such a way that guests can pitch in and you are not left with all the housework and laundry. When selecting bedding you’ll find that a down or down alternative comforter is a versatile bedding solution; breathable down is warm in the winter and cool in the summer  so there’s no real need for seasonal bedding. Down comforters last longer when housed in a duvet, which is somewhat like a pillowcase for the comforter. Duvets are much flatter than a quilt or comforter so you can store several in a small space; with three duvets you can have one on the comforter, one in the laundry and one at the ready so you are always prepared for guests.

Towels are another issue because there are never enough unless you count the pile of wet towels on the floor. If you are near water or have a pool the last thing you want is to see your good bath towels taken outside so it’s a good idea to stock up on beach towels and store them somewhere other than the bathroom. For guests it’s a good idea to allocate one bath towel, one hand towel and one wash cloth per person although you may wish to have a few extra bath sheets and towels.

Because there are not too many fast food restaurants that offer that many healthy choices on their menus, it seems like we are always stuck eating somewhere fast and unhealthy because we have not planned well enough and ran out of time. So since it is almost inevitable, how do we make the most out of a fast food meal without putting on the pounds?

The great thing is that many fast food restaurant chains are now required to post calorie information on their menu boards. This now makes it much easier for you to make a better decision of what you can and should order when on the run. Something to think about when ordering food is to be aware of the number of calories that are in salad dressings, cheese and sour cream.

Although you may be thinking you are eating healthy while ordering a salad, you actually may not be because of the calories from those small additions. When you order a grilled chicken sandwich, order it without the mayonnaise. Restaurants have become much more conscious of menu alternatives like salads with low calorie or fat free dressings.

If you do not see these items, ask. They are often times available, just not displayed with the unhealthier choices.

A few general guidelines that may be helpful when eating on the go are:

1. Stick to the lighter menu options. Restaurants are offering more healthy choices on their menus. You must find the ones that you should be ordering to maintain a nutritional lifestyle. Healthy fast food eating is dependent on you understanding what is in the fast food items and making the right choice.

2. Understand the portion sizes. Most value sized combo meals are well over 1,000 calories. This is way too many calories for your body to burn through without leaving some to be absorbed as FAT. If they do not offer smaller portion sizes, ask for a takeout bag and eat it another day for another meal. I do this most every time that I eat out, even at the healthier restaurants. It is very important to control how much goes into your body every meal. Just because food may be healthy does not mean you can still eat twice as much as your body needs, you will not be able to absorb it all or burn through it, and that means it has to go somewhere, your fat cells.

 

3. Order Food To Go. Research has shown that humans are more likely to eat more when they are eating out. So what does that mean? Avoid the situation to where you are likely to overindulge.

Even though it seems impossible, eating fast food in a healthy way is possible. You just need to pay more attention to the healthier options that these restaurants now provide you on their menus. This may be extremely difficult in the beginning because of the habits you have formed, but the payoff to your health is worth it.

When one thinks of fast food, burgers, hot dogs, and buffalo wings come to mind. Vegan fast food?..Yes..It does exist! Vegan fast food restaurants have been cropping up across the globe. FoodSwings in New York City is one of these restaurants. Their menu is quite vast and encompasses every imaginable, fast food item. Veggie burgers, veggie dogs, faux buffalo wings, faux chicken fingers, faux Philly cheesesteak, chile, and faux fish n chips are just a few of their delectable menu offerings!

Faux meats and faux cheeses are made of soy, wheat, gluten, or other non-animal products. Typically, soy is the ingredient of choice. For the newly vegan or carnivore guest, I can assure you that these faux substitutes will not disappoint you! You may even convert to veganism yourself. These faux meats and soy cheeses will even please the palate of a carnivore!

My first experience at an all-vegan, fast food restaurant was indeed at FoodSwings in New York for both lunch and dinner. I ordered the veggie dog, buffalo wings, fish n chips, and potato skins with faux bacon bits. These all vegan restaurants make this dining experience an authentic one. In other words, just as carnivores indulge in all of the toppings and condiments enhance their selections, these all-vegan alternatives do likewise. My veggie dog arrived complete with faux cheese, mustard and relish. The fish n chips was accompanied with vegan tartar sauce. The buffalo wings were smothered in BBQ sauce. Finally, the potato skins arrived with faux bacon bits and faux sour cream. For the first time in my life, I could relate to anyone who had experienced the fast food, dining scene!

Vegan, fast food restaurants are becoming more commonplace in Europe also. Germany in particular can boast of several of these eateries. They serve the typical fare of veggie dogs, veggie burgers, buffalo wings, chicken fingers, and so forth. Some of these restaurants specialize in a particular type of fast food, such as veggie dogs.

As a vegan child, I can recall feeling “out of place” when accompanying friends to the breach or seashore or on a vacation. While the others found a satisfying lunch at a clam shack or burger cafe, I had to either settle for fries and a salad or frantically wander around the vacation spot seeking vegan meal options. That is no longer the case!
